"We are gonna deal with Jeff’s father in this season, and that was definitely the hardest episode for us to write, we rewrote it after the table read because it wasn’t quite right, and what we realized halfway through that rewrite, this is a story that we had talked about doing for years, but even we had avoided it, even Dan had avoided it. It was definitely something that was in the plans, we feel very confident in saying this was going to happen in season 4, and we’ve teased the audience about it just enough that we felt that we couldn’t not do it. We ended up having to work very hard to write it, and, who knows, I think we’ve done a very good job with it, the audience will be the final judge on whether we’ve handled it gracefully or not, but it was very hard to allow ourselves to write those quieter scenes, those more emotional scenes, because we look at a script and we think, well we’re comedy writers, this thing has to be funny, and I think we struck the balance, but like I said, the audience will have to tell us if we did."
